The Yango Fellowship is an intensive bursary program of learning and mentorship designed to empower brilliant STEM students across Africa. The Fellowship equips participants with the skills and support needed to achieve their goals and transform ideas into impactful solutions for their communities. Open to students from six countries, including Ethiopia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Zambia, Ghana and Mozambique.
For several years, Yango has supported Technovation for Girls in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan — helping more than 9,000 girls become changemakers through technology. Through the program, participants gain skills in AI, mentorship, and confidence to see themselves as future innovators and leaders. Girls learn to solve real community challenges by building mobile apps, developing entrepreneurial thinking, and applying STEM skills in practical ways — from improving education and ecology to creating smart city solutions.
To help young talent thrive in a competitive and fast-changing field, we have hosted hackathons across Africa — engaging more than 1,000 participants. These challenges invite students to tackle real-world problems, such as predicting travel times using factors like location, time of day, day of the week, and weather conditions. By combining data science with local context, participants gain practical experience shaping the future of smarter, more connected cities.
Yango has long collaborated with deaf and hard of hearing drivers to make our platform more accessible. The driver app is adapted with visual and vibration alerts — including flashing notifications for new orders and fitness tracker integration for vibration signals. Users are informed when their ride is handled by a hearing-impaired driver and can easily communicate through in-app chat if needed. These features were developed in close consultation with drivers, reflecting our commitment to inclusive technology for all.
She Moves began as a women-driven taxi service designed to restore safety and dignity in everyday travel. It soon grew into a broader empowerment network, connecting women to stronger support systems and new opportunities. Working with government and private partners, we are helping create pathways for women to participate and lead — turning every ride into more than transportation: a bridge to inclusion.
When calling an ambulance, patients and their families now receive an SMS with a link to an interactive map showing the real-time location of the assigned ambulance team. Built using the JavaScript API from Yango Maps, this feature has made waiting more transparent and less stressful for callers, while also reducing the workload for ambulance operators. A simple technology improvement — with meaningful benefits for both the public and emergency services.
The My Dreams feature allows users to learn about their drivers’ goals and aspirations, fostering a deeper human connection beyond the ride. A simple tip can make a meaningful difference — helping drivers work toward dreams like starting a business, buying a home, going on a holy pilgrimage, or building a better future for their families. Through this initiative, Yango encourages riders to support drivers in tangible ways and reflects our ongoing commitment to helping partner drivers thrive personally and professionally.
We believe mobility should work for everyone. Yango offers special in-app options for users with disabilities, allowing riders to request the support they need, including: Wheelchair Accessible rides, so drivers can assist appropriatel, Text-only communication, for users unable to communicate verbally, Help me find the car, so drivers can provide extra support locating and entering the vehicle. Accessibility isn’t an add-on — it’s part of inclusive design.
Yango supports initiatives that expand access and opportunity in sports — especially for women and children from underserved communities. Our programs include supporting women judo athletes in Azerbaijan, basketball training for women athletes and 400 girls in Côte d’Ivoire, and joyful football tournaments for children in Zambia. Because sport builds confidence, community, and possibility.
Going to school should be safe — everywhere in the world. In Zambia, together with ZRST, Yango has helped improve road safety near five government schools by constructing speed humps, installing zebra crossings, and placing speed limit signs. Through interactive workshops, more than 8,000 children have been trained in essential road safety practices.
Serving communities is at the core of what Yango does. Inspired by grassroots organizations across Colombia working to uplift women and young people, Yango launched an open call offering financial support and expertise for programs that strengthen well-being, community safety, and financial inclusion.
