The country doesn’t have a uniform system for determining which plates are not allowed. For example, Bogota restricts two plate number endings per day. Others use one per day during weekdays, while Manizales uses a combination of both.
Generally, electric vehicles and hybrids are exempted from this rule. As an independent driver, the rules surrounding private cars will most likely apply to you.
City | Restricted Vehicles | Schedule |
|---|---|---|
Bogota | Private cars, trucks, taxis | Monday to Saturday 5:30am to 9pm depending on the vehicle type |
Medellin | Private cars, trucks, taxis, motorcycles | Monday to Friday 5am to 8pm |
Cali | Private cars, trucks below 5 tons | Monday to Friday 6am to 7pm |
In Bogota, this is a fixed amount of around $600,000. However, for other places like Medellin and Cali, it’s based on the daily minimum wage. These cities place the penalty equivalent to 15 days of minimum wage earnings or around $700,000. So, any increase means that a higher payment will be required too.
On top of paying a fine, the vehicle may be immobilized as well. And in cases where it’s towed, you’ll have to pay for that service as well as storage.
So, before booking rides for the day, make sure that your car is allowed. For this, we recommend using government sites and other official channels to prevent misinformation and hefty fines. If you think your vehicle is exempt, confirm it with authorities. You may have to apply for a permit.
